The Death of Gonzo Journalism, or is it?

The man who turned self-destruction into an art form has crafted his last masterpiece. On Sunday February 20th, Hunter S. Thompson ended his life with the same characteristic madness that defined much of it. No stranger to the gun, the good doctor died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while at his fortified compound in Woody Creek. Is this a final chapter befitting a man who lived by his own set of rules or a sad case of one man’s demons becoming too overwhelming?

Writer, editor, and small-game hunter, Hunter S. Thompson was born in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. An advocate of the ‘new journalism’, he was the first reporter to infiltrate the Hell's Angels. In fact, he rode with them for a year, an experience that eventually led to his being savagely beaten up. He went on to produce a stream of outrageous books, including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1971). At one point, he brazenly awarded himself a Doctorate. In the late 1980’s he contributed a weekly column to the San Francisco Examiner, but it was his work in Rolling Stone magazine that earned him notoriety. Later books include Better than Sex (1995), The Rum Diary (1998), and Screwjack and Other Stories (2000).

HST will go down in the history of American literature as one of kind and a true influence to a “Generation of Swine”!
